Hair Loss Do’s And Don’ts

Published 10 January 2019

You can never truly prepare for when hair loss happens to you!

It hits you at the most unexpected moment in your life. It can happen as early as your 20’s or during the prime of your 40’s.But one fact remains, when you are genetically predisposed to hair thinning or balding, you can never escape it, however if you catch it early, you can prevent further loss. The worst thing is hair loss creeps up on you gradually and often unnoticed. And when you have lost so much hair, your life can feel like it’s been turned upside down – affecting you physically and emotionally. The good news is there is something you can do to keep it from worsening. Here are the crucial do’s and don’ts if you are battling hair loss.

1. Don’t shampoo your hair everyday

If you think that shampooing every day is an excellent hair care habit, think again. You should only be washing your hair with shampoo every two to three days at the most. Shampoos contain sulphates and other chemicals that can damage hair when used excessively. This strips away the natural oils that keep your hair strands strong, shiny and healthy, making it more prone to breakage.

According to California dermatologist and hair research specialist Dr. Paradi Mirmirani, “Hair is a fibre. Think of a wool fibre: The more you wash it, the worse it’s going to look. There’s no need to wash your hair every day either.” And as added tip: when washing your hair, do not use hot water. Rinse off with cold water instead. Hot water, while relaxing, strips away the hair of its natural oils, making it more prone to breakage

2. Don’t go overboard with styling products

Hair gel, mousse, hairspray, hair wax and clay – most of you use one or more of these hair styling products on a daily basis. Like shampoo, hair styling products contain chemicals that are too harsh for your hair when used excessively. These leave your hair less healthy and more prone to splitting and breaking. As a general rule, avoid products that contain silicone or alcohol in its formulation. Alcohol can be drying and strips away the natural oils of your hair, while silicone prevents nutrients to penetrate to the hair.

3. Don’t comb your hair over

A trick that most balding men are guilty of doing is growing out their remaining hair long and combing it over to the balding area. Yes, it sure does the trick in concealing the problem area. But the sad thing is that it actually makes your hair loss condition more obvious.

4. Don’t succumb to unhealthy lifestyle habits

An unhealthy lifestyle including smoking and alcohol, can actually aggravate your hair loss. In fact, studies have linked cigarette smoking with hair loss. Smoking puts you at greater risk of hair thinning and balding. The toxic chemicals found in cigarette affect the circulation of blood and nutrients to the hair follicles, which can lead to the disruption of the normal hair growth cycle. On the other hand, drinking alcohol can have an effect on hair loss, as it affects the nutrients for healthy hair such as zinc, B vitamins and Vitamin C.

5. Don’t feel defeated

One of the things that you should not do if you are experiencing hair loss (or on the verge of balding) is to feel defeated. All is not lost because there are things that you can do to address the problem. In fact, you are doing it right now by reading this article!

6. Give your hair some gentle care

Simple steps like using a soft cloth towel and patting your hair dry instead of rubbing vigorously after a shower can go a long way in keeping what is left of your hair. Also, if you have shorter hair, run your finger through your hair rather than using a comb or brush. Frequent brushing and combing can force the breakage of the gentle hair strands on your scalp.

7. Feed your hair

Just like any part of the body, your hair needs vitamins and minerals to keep it healthy. Incorporate food into your diet that are rich in iron, B Vitamins, zinc and Vitamin E. Also, give your hair a little bit of sunshine and nourish it with Vitamin D. This essential hair nutrient, which most Australians are deficient in, helps promote hair follicle growth.

8. Keep your hair short

For men suffering from male pattern baldness, it is advisable to keep your hairstyle short. The shorter your hair, the less obvious your balding issue becomes. If you are bold enough, you can even shave your hair off completely and consider Scalp Micro Pigmentation SMP, that our clinic offers for a permanent solution to a bald scalp.

9. Relax and manage your stress

According to the 2013 Stress and wellness in Australia Survey conducted by the Australian Psychological Society, more Australians reported moderate to severe levels of stress compared in 2012. And not surprisingly, more younger Australians are experiencing higher stress levels compared to the older generation. When the level of stress impacts diet, lifestyle, sleeping habits and hormone levels, depleting your body of essential nutrients, can lead to an increase in hair loss and shedding.

10. Do something about it

If hair loss is bothering you, do something about it. Seek medical advice and find out why. Most hair loss is due to hereditary factors found in androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness. However, other types of hair loss can be caused by other reasons. Knowing and understanding the cause of your hair loss condition, will allow your hair restoration doctor to recommend and provide you with the necessary medications or treatments. One of the available treatments to hair loss is hair transplant surgery. This permanent solution involves the harvesting of donor hairs at the back or sides of the head and meticulously transplanting these extracted hair follicles to the balding site. Depending on your suitability, hair transplant surgery can be performed using either the FUT or FUE techniques. With the expertise of a credible hair restoration surgeon, the procedure can help you restore your lost hair and confidence. If you are in Melbourne, Medihair Transplant Clinics will provide you with the right solution to your hair loss dilemma.
